Rather than being distracting, this quality feels intentional as it adds a distinctive atmospheric vibe to the songs. I think the way that you evolve as a listener ultimately shapes the way you create music. But also, music has been evolving so rapidly and has been for years and years. I think our ears have evolved way past where society has held its expectation. Always has been. I think a lot of that had a huge impact.
What do you say to that? You know what I mean? You allow the song and the character and the personality of the song or album at large to dictate what is needed in the studio or instrumentally or as far as arrangement is concerned. Why would you let a word dictate something like music? Music has no eyes. I mean, the eyes of music are the heart. I was just having trouble finding the direction for the verse. We had a really great chorus happening and the song was working except for the verse. And Brad just had an instinct that Beck would know. We had some lovely times hanging with him.
So, we sent the track to him and within like two days he sent back several options. And his first swing was incredible, which I think is a testimony to the caliber of his talent. Yeah, it was really cool. The confrontation. Sometimes the communication is good and ends well.

And then, we thought about how that plays into your life as an individual, as a person, and informs some of your decision making in your thoughts and your opinions. People getting offended too easily? I think, for myself, the thing that we were looking at more is that depression is at an all-time high and the suicide rate is up, and anxiety is up. And why do you think that is? And I think that being under a certain standard and finding it quite difficult to even pinpoint what that standard is, and then definitely not being able to live up to it, is quite stressful. It is very, very heavy. Would you say you guys have high standards for yourselves as a band?
I hate how serious I always sound in these interviews, but I suppose I am pretty serious to a degree. Yes, myself for sure. And Brad as well and everybody in the group had certain things going on. We all did. But yeah, I had a family member who I grew up with pass away. So, all those things were happening at the same time.

This record certainly has its moments such as the groovy Ready to Let Go, or the powerhouse of a track Broken Boy. Broken Boy, has the power of the early days, with the later era bits of experimentation producing a fast paced, gritty opening track with some catchy guitars. The following year, they released a fantastic version Broken Boy featuring Detroit rock legend Iggy Pop. Although it has its highlights, this record does not hold its own to its predecessors, and was a bit of a let down for listeners. Innovation, and experimentation are good, it just did not work out too well this time. This album has a sound much similar to their self-titled debut album than Melophobia, which was released two years later.
The guys brought back the raw, garage rock sound which made their first album so strong. There is plenty of in your face excitement on this record, emphasized in songs such as Indy Kidz, and Aberdeen. Shultz is belting out the lyrics in Aberdeen mixed with loud but catchy guitars by Lincoln Parish and the other Shultz brother Brad. That along with a softer verse, but a loud, wall of sound like chorus are often part of the formula for good music which the guys nailed on that track. The singles released of this album Shake Me Down, Aberdeen, Around My Head, and Always Something seemed to be the stronger tracks, unlike other Cage the Elephant albums, where the most interesting music you can find is on the b-sides.

But Cage the Elephant puts on a performance that would steel any show!! I saw them open for the Black Keys at the Mesa Amphitheater several years ago. They continue to grow their sound into something quite special. If you ever have the chance, Cage the Elephant is very much a worthwhile investment, and one helluva good time!!!
